 TOP TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE

Social Media can seem scary but by following these steps you will reduce your children's risk.

1 USE STRONG PASSWORDS

A strong password is your first line of defence against intruders and imposters. For the strongest passwords you should use at least 8 characters and include numbers, capital letters and symbols.

Don’t just use one password as this can be dangerous, you could possibly look at using a password manager to keep track of passwords for different sites.

Most sites will offer 2 step verification, for example, it will ask for a phone number and send you a code by text to enter, we suggest that you use this if available.

Make sure you do not write passwords down on paper or sticky notes and leave them around your device.

3 ALWAYS LOG OFF THE DEVICE

Whenever you are using a shared device either at a Internet cafe or public space make sure you log off once you have finished using it. Forgetting to do this allows for others to gain access to your profile and personal information.

4 NEVER GIVE OUT INFORMATION TO SOMEONE YOU DO NOT KNOW

You should never give information, especially personal information, out to someone you do not know, doing this can put yourself in danger and open to online fraud and identity theft.

2 CHECK YOUR PRIVACY SETTINGS

Check your privacy settings and make sure that only the people who you want to be able to see your profiles and posts can see them. Without this strangers could access any information you post.

5 IF YOU EXPERIENCE ONLINE BULLYING OR ARE CONTACTED BY STRANGERS REPORT IT

If you ever experience online bullying or are contacted by strangers make sure you tell someone, either a teacher or an adult, who will be able to help.
