 TOP TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE

These top tips will help you stay safe online and reduce your risk.

1 USE A FIREWALL TO SECURE YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION

You should protect your internet connection with a firewall on your device. This effectively creates a ‘buffer zone’ between your IT network and other, external networks. In the simplest case, this means between your computer (or computers) and ‘the Internet’. Within this buffer zone, incoming traffic can be analysed to find out whether or not it should be allowed onto your network. Check to see if your internet security software includes a firewall.

2 CHOOSE THE MOST SECURE SETTINGS FOR YOUR DEVICES AND SOFTWARE

By electing the most secure settings for your devices and software you limit your chance of being a victim of a cyber attack. For example, remove any unwanted or unused software programs.

3 CONTROL WHO HAS ACCESS TO YOUR DATA AND SERVICES

One of the most simple ways to stay safe online is by restricting who has access to your data, if a website asks you for information or requires you to sign in make sure you enter only the information that is needed and check where that information is going.

4 PROTECT YOURSELF FROM VIRUSES AND OTHER MALWARE

You should always have anti-virus software installed on your computer or mobile device, if available, and ensure that it is kept up to date for the most effective protection of your device.

5 KEEP YOUR DEVICES AND SOFTWARE UP TO DATE

By keeping your software and apps up to date it will minimise the risk of a virus and malware infecting your device, as updates fix identified bugs and security flaws within the software. Not installing these vital updates will leave you at a higher risk of an attack from a hacker.
